It rained all night. It was the most rain I encountered all trip. It was almost a sign that it was time to finish the trail, to get to Canada and finally be done the journey. Continue reading

Day 141: The Last Night

Mile 2624 to Mile 2646

Well this is almost the end – today was our last full day on trail. We had our last campfire and shared our last trail dinner together. The sky was a heavy overcast, so there was no sunset to watch. Continue reading

Day 138: The Last Rest

Rest Day in Stehekin

Stehekin is a pretty magical place, sitting at the north end of Lake Chelan (a 55 mile long mountain lake in the Cascades that is picturesque from every angle). After two breakfasts at the restaurant I sat around by the water all morning, watching the boats and planes come and go and strumming around on a guitar. Day 137: To Stehekin!

Mile 2568 to High Bridge Ranger Station (Stehekin)
12 miles

Distracted by big trees and mushrooms, I realized that I still had 8 miles to go and only 2 hours to do them. Somehow I managed to walk into the Ranger Station just as the shuttle pulled in. Continue reading

Day 136: In the Clouds

Mile 2541 to Mile 2568

Day 134: Blueberries

Pear Lake to Mile 2518
24 miles

They’re wild blueberries. That’s why they taste so good. And they’re everywhere. The mountainsides are covered in the red leaves of ripe berry bushes. It’s hard not to stop and pick some but it would take a while before you could fill up on them, so hike on I must. Continue reading

Day 133: Over 4000!

Stevens Pass to Pear Lake
18 miles

This morning I was finally able to pull myself back to the trail after an amazing time at the Dinsmore’s. I now have only two sections of trail left between me and the border, and they also happen to be two of the most difficult. Continue reading
